This activity will focus on an in-depth discussion of proximal gastrectomy as a surgical management option for GE junction and proximal gastric cancers. We will review patient selection, oncologic rationale, reconstruction options/techniques, and outcomes as compared to total gastrectomy.

This activity is intended for all surgeons and other health care professionals who are involved in the treatment of patients with GI cancer.

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

• Identify appropriately selected patients and disease pathology for proximal gastrectomy 
• Explain the oncologic rationale and principles for proximal gastrectomy  
•  Describe reconstruction options after proximal gastrectomy and advantages/disadvantages (esophagogastrectomy, double tract reconstruction, jejunal interposition) 
• Compare functional and long term outcomes comparing proximal gastrectomy to total gastrectomy or esophagectomy
